Tornado drill for Kentucky March 4

Campbell County will participate in the State of Kentucky Tornado Drill. Tuesday March 4, 2008 at 10:07 a.m. the Campbell County Emergency Management Office will be activating the County outdoor warning sirens and the National Weather Service will be activating the NOAA All Hazards Weather Radios with the monthly test tone.

Trial date set for fatal wreck

NEWPORT - The truck driver accused of causing the crash that killed a 14-year-old girl will go to trial or reach a plea agreement by March 27.

Greg Gibson, 43, of Abington, Va. appeared in Judge Julie Reinhardt-Ward’s courtroom Wednesday.

According to Alexandria Police, eyewitnesses say a tractor-trailer driven by Gibson ran a red light at the intersection of the AA Highway and Poplar Ridge Road in Alexandria on July 24, 2007. The tractor-trailer broadsided a pickup truck driven by Alexandria resident Leah Michelle Evans with her two children Heather Evans, 14, and Jacob Evans, 9.

Heather Evans died from her injuries the next day and seriously injured her mother and brother.

Snow flurries continue

Snow flurries will continue through noon, leaving a smattering of school closings and delays in Northern Kentucky but no problems at the airport.

The chance of light snow continues through tomorrow with temperatures hovering in the mid 20’s.

Before noon, Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport reported no unusual delays.

Doctors Perform Surgery On Lasitter

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville teen who was severely injured on a ride at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom is recovering from additional surgery performed over the weekend.

Doctors reportedly removed some bone from the end of Katilyn Lasitter’s left leg.

NewsChopper 32 flew over the Superman Tower of Power ride, where part of her right leg was severed last summer. Crews appear to be in the early stages of dismantling the ride.

Kaitlyn’s mother said this is her daughter’s fourth amputation surgery since the accident.

She said Kaitlyn will not walk again for at least five weeks.

Pivotal Conservative Publisher Buckley Dies

Conservative author and editor William F. Buckley Jr. died Wednesday at his home in Stamford, Conn. He was 82 years old.

Buckley was a publisher, editor, columnist, novelist, debater, TV talk show star of “Firing Line,” harpsichordist, trans-oceanic sailor and mentor to young conservatives. He once lost an election for New York City mayor.

He is perhaps most famous for founding the National Review magazine, which became a flagship conservative opinion journal. His first work on non-fiction, “God And Man At Yale,” in 1951, was an early critique that began a now common conservative complaint about liberalism on U.S. college campuses. Marijuana Charges Dropped Against Former Magistrate

WARSAW, Ky. — Charges of growing marijuana have been dropped against a longtime Gallatin County politician.

Former Gallatin County Magistrate Tom Ellis’ trial was scheduled to begin Monday after investigators said they found about 100 small marijuana plants in June on property he owned.

A special prosecutor from the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office assigned to try the case said last week there was not enough evidence to proceed.

Ellis and his former son-in-law, Gary Lewis, were indicted in November on charges that they were cultivating marijuana. (Read the full post about ‘Marijuana Charges Dropped Against Former Magistrate’…)

Mischa Barton Faces 4 Misdemeanor Charges

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Mischa Barton is facing four misdemeanors related to a drinking and driving arrest last year in West Hollywood.

Court papers obtained by CelebTV.com show the former star of “The O.C.” was charged Tuesday with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving while having a 0.08 percent or higher blood alcohol level, driving without a valid license and possession of marijuana 28.5 grams or less.

Barton was arrested Dec. 27 in West Hollywood after sheriff’s deputies saw her car straddling two lanes of traffic and failing to signal for a turn. (Read the full post about ‘Mischa Barton Faces 4 Misdemeanor Charges’…)

Fort Campbell Soldier Killed In Blast Near Baghdad

ARDMORE, Okla. — A 101st Airborne Division soldier has been killed in Iraq.

The mother of 19-year-old Private 1st Class Michael Phillips of Ardmore, Okla., said she was told Sunday afternoon that her son was killed Sunday morning.

Anglia Phillips saif her son died near Baghdad when the Humvee he was in was hit by a homemade bomb.

Phillips was a 2006 graduate of Ardmore High School and was based at Fort Campbell, a sprawling Army post on the Kentucky-Tennessee state line.

Writers Overwhelmingly Approve New Contract

LOS ANGELES — The Writers Guild of America said its members have voted overwhelmingly to approve a new contract with Hollywood studios that increases payment for shows offered on the Internet.

The guild said that the deal was endorsed by almost 94 percent of those who voted in Los Angeles and New York.

The contract was approved through a mail-in ballot that came after members were briefed two weeks ago on the deal and voted to end the 100-day strike that devastated the entertainment industry. (Read the full post about ‘Writers Overwhelmingly Approve New Contract’…)
