Wood Hudson gets $100K grant
NEWPORT - The Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory in Newport recently received a $100,000 grant to expand its undergraduate research education program.
The grant, from the Marge and Charles J. Schott Foundation, will allow the laboratory to add about five more students to the program, said Julia H. Carter, president of the Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory.
College students in the program work alongside the cancer researchers and with high-tech equipment not found anywhere else in the area, Carter said.
About 80 percent of the 200 students that have gone through the program in the past 25 years have gone onto medical fields, most staying in the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area, Carter said.
“As you know, Kentucky is medically underserved,” Carter said. “There is a crying need for additional health care providers and physicians. Our program has been eminently successful for attracting students.”
The grant will help pay for students’ salaries and some research supplies over the next two years, splitting the grant $50,000 for each year.
